What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is about helping people live healthier, happier, fuller lives. While typically thought of as bone doctors, chiropractors actually work cooperatively with the nervous system. According to Gray's Anatomy, the nervous system is the control system in the body. It coordinates all other systems such as respiratory, digestive, muscular, immune, and so forth.

The nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and the spinal nerves that exit the vertebral column through openings on the sides of each vertebra. Peripheral nerves branch off of the spinal nerves to serve organs, tissues, blood vessels, muscles, etc. Information connecting brain and body travels through the spine. This line of communication maintains homeostasis, the proper regulation of health through the body.

One focus of chiropractic is to remove disruptions or distortions that impede the quality of information being exchanged between brain and body. A slight spinal misaligment causes a subluxation. Chiropractors are trained to locate subluxations, adjust the spine, and restore the healthy flow of nerve energy, thus increasing the body's ability to heal itself, recover fully, and express greater health.

Chiropractic First

The same intelligence that grows a single cell into a complex human being, made of billions of cells, leafheals the body. If nerve flow to the stomach is compromised, for example, then information going to the brain regarding digestion will be distorted. The same is true for all organs, muscles, blood vessels and so forth. When a chiropractor delivers an adjustment and removes interference, the nervous system functions more optimally. The body is then able to heal itself via a healthier two-way communication system.

The philosophy of chiropractic is that health comes from within the body. It is the innate intelligence within our bodies that does the healing. It is not the drugs, surgeries, or physician that does the healing. It is chiropractor's job to remove subluxations so that the power that made the body can better heal the body.
